Evaluate high and low separately
In Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better, high uses standard rankings. A qualifying low has five different ranks, all 8 or below, with Ace low. Straights and flushes do not disqualify this low hand.
Use two hole cards on each side
Both high and low must each use exactly two hole cards and three board cards, but they may use different combinations. Establish the high hand, then check low independently, comparing from the low hand's highest card downward.
How the pot is split
When a qualifying low exists, high and low usually receive half each. If no low qualifies, the best high hand wins the whole pot. One player can win both halves.
If multiple players tie, split each half separately. Odd-chip distribution follows the specific tournament or platform rules.
Worked example: different high and low winners
Teaching example, not a recorded hand. Board: A♣, 3♦, 6♥, K♠, K♦. A holds 2♣, 4♦, Q♣, J♦; B holds K♥, K♣, 5♣, 7♦. B uses K♥ and K♣ with K♠, K♦ and A♣ from the board to make four kings and win high.
For low, both use A♣, 3♦ and 6♥ from the board. A adds 2♣ and 4♦ for 6-4-3-2-A; B adds 5♣ and 7♦ for 7-6-5-3-A. A wins low. If only these players contest one 1,200-chip pot, with no side pots or additional fees, each receives 600. This is a pot award, not net profit.
Worked example: receiving one quarter of the pot
A separate teaching example has a 1,200-chip pot, only players A and B, no side pots and no additional fees. Board: A♣, 3♦, 6♥, K♠, K♦. A holds 2♣, 4♦, Q♣, J♦; B now holds K♥, K♣, 2♥, 4♠. B still makes four kings and wins the high portion outright.
For low, each player uses their own 2 and 4 with A♣, 3♦ and 6♥. Both make 6-4-3-2-A. They split the 600-chip low half, receiving 300 each. B also receives the 600-chip high half. A therefore receives 300 in total and B receives 900. Sharing the best low does not guarantee half of the entire pot.
